3 Things to Consider Before Buying a Wood Stove

When temperatures begin to fall, a wood stove can be a great source of warmth and comfort. Wood stoves can be used both indoors and outdoors and are a great addition to the home. While many homeowners are enticed by the thought of a roaring fire, purchasing a wood stove does require some thought. There are various options to choose from when it comes to wood burning stoves. Here are three things to consider before purchasing a wood stove.

Type

The first thing that any homeowner should consider is which type of wood stove will work best for their needs. There are multiple options to choose from. Some wood stoves burn logs while others require wood pellets.

There is also a distinction between catalytic combustion and non-catalytic combustion stoves. Catalytic combustion stoves circulate the smoke exhaust allowing it to be burnt again. Non-catalytic combustion stoves do not burn the exhaust. The catalytic combustion stoves are cleaner burning and more efficient. Non-catalytic stoves are easier to use, however, they do require more cleanup.

Cost

Budget is something else to consider when it comes to wood burning stoves. The average cost of a wood burning stove is between $3,000 and $4,000 with installation. Costs can vary depending on the size of the stove and whether it's being installed indoors or outside. A chimney will also be required for venting purposes. While an existing chimney can sometimes be used, often a new one needs to be installed. Metal chimneys are best suited for dealing with the exhaust from the wood stove. In most cases, the cost of the chimney is included with installation.

Size

Size is another important consideration when installing a wood stove. Smaller stoves are best for heating a small cottage or a single room in the home. Smaller stoves are perfect for zone heating and are a great option if only one or two rooms require an additional heat source. Medium sized stoves will heat a small home without issue. Large stoves are required to heat large homes and work best for open floor plans. If a home is in a very cold climate, a larger wood stove may also be required in order to provide ample heat. One of the benefits of wood stoves is that they can be used even when the electricity goes out.

Wood stoves can be a great addition to any home. Before purchasing it's important to consider which type works best for the home and the homeowner. Catalytic wood stoves are cleaner burning and more efficient, but they are also higher maintenance than non-catalytic wood stoves. Cost and size are also two other things to take into consideration when choosing a wood stove.
