Planning Your Flower Gardens For Spring? 3 Things To Include On Your List

Now is a good time to start planning your flower garden because it gives you time to get everything you need. Having the right things will increase your chances of having a flower garden full of beautiful and healthy flowers. To help, below are three of these things that you should make sure is on your list.

Irrigation System

An irrigation system will ensure that your flowers receive the amount of water they need no matter if it rains or not. This also saves you a lot of time and effort as you will not have to worry about keeping everything watered. There are different types of irrigation systems available including:

Soaker Hose Irrigation System

One type that works well is known as the soaker hose irrigation system. The hoses are porous, which means water seeps out of them. Place a hose close to each flower so the water gets to the roots. You can bury the soaker hoses in the ground, so they are not seen. It is attached directly to a faucet. This system can be attached to a timer so you can control when the water comes on or off.

Drip Irrigation

This type has hoses that have perforated holes along the length of them. These holes are also known as emitters. The hose is attached to a water source, such as a faucet. When the water is turned on, the water comes out of these small holes slowly and into the soil. This allows the water to sink directly to the roots and you will not have to worry about water runoff. You snake the hoses around the garden next to the flowers. It is easy to add or more hoses if the size of your flower gardens changes.

Garden Edging and Mulch

You need to put mulch on your flower garden to help preserve moisture, as well as to keep weeds out. Mulch can also cover the drip irrigation hoses if you choose this type. There are different types of mulch available on the market, such as grass clippings, pine straw, fresh wood chips, chopped leaves, and bagged mulch that you can purchase at garden centers.

Whatever type of mulch you choose put approximately a three-inch layer on your flower garden. When finished, push the mulch a few inches away from the base of each plant. This is so the plants are not suffocated.

Along with mulch install and edging around your flower garden. This will not only make your flower garden look nice but will also keep weeds and grass from spreading into the garden. You can use different things as an edging. You could purchase landscaping rocks even though these will not work as well to prevent weeds and grass. There are flexible strips that are made of metal or a durable plastic that are flexible. You push the strip a few inches into the soil to secure it. You could also hire a contractor to install a garden edging for you.
